Math Placement Exam

Am I required to take a Math Placement Exam?

All College of Science students are required to take the Math Placement Exam. If you have AP or dual credit, that may be factored in when building your schedule. To take the Math Placement Exam, log in to howdy.tamu.edu, go to the Applicant tab and follow the instructions for Math Placement Exam. Be sure to take the one for Science majors.

What does my Math Placement Exam score mean?

    0 – 21 = MATH 150 (Functions, Trigonometry and Linear Systems)

22 and higher = MATH 171 (Analytic Geometry and Calculus)

What if my score is lower than I want?

You have the option to take the test up to three times, although you must wait two weeks between tests. It is very important to take the test early, so there is time to retake it if necessary. The Personalized Precalculus Program is an online precal review. Upon completion of the program, you are encouraged to take the MPE again. If you fail to earn at least a 22 on the exam, you will register for MATH 150 instead of 171.

What is the difference between MATH 151 and MATH 171?

According to the catalog, MATH 171 is designed to be a more demanding version of MATH 151. MATH 171 is primarily taken by College of Science majors, while MATH 151 is primarily taken by College of Engineering majors.
